Join author Shen Yang and translator Nicky Harman for this special event focusing on picture book translation. In the first part of the event, Shen Yang will discuss her book Golden Childhood (published by Balestier Press, 2023), and how she combines the folk art of illustrator Chen Huifang and her own story, and Nicky will discuss the rewards and challenges of translating picture books.
The second part of the event will be an interactive workshop to explore the book and its translation, including an exhibition of prints of the paintings themselves.
The event is free but please reserve your place here.
Golden Childhood narrates Shen Yang’s fondest childhood memories of the Chinese countryside and brings them to life through the vibrant hand-drawn paintings of Jinshan Folk Painting artist Chen Huifang. Through its lyrical writing and enchanting imagery, this book celebrates the simple pleasures in life, the joys of playing freely outdoors and enjoying nature, and is sprinkled with interesting bits about Chinese culture and old ways of living.
